Intrepid's Gas Production Plant Achieves Fully Automated Status

intrepid_logo.gifIntrepid Technology and Resources, Inc. (IESV) announces the company's flagship Methane anaerobic digester located at the 4000 head Whitesides Dairy near Rupert Idaho has achieved a fully automated operational status.

The anaerobic digester, which processes animal and industrial waste products, produces substantial quantities of Methane gas as a by-product. Methane is the primary combustible component in normal household and commercial natural gas.

ITR intends initially, to sell the excess gas to a pipeline carrier. However ITR will, in 2005, power an alternate fuel vehicle with this gas making ITR one of the few companies ever to take animal waste and utilize it to power a car or truck in the United States. This will also make ITR's compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station in Idaho Falls the first commercial station in the U.S. to dispense gas from a waste product for vehicle use. [ more ]

Hydrogen Cars Are Almost Here, But...

BusinessWeek Online has published an interesting article that discusses the January Auto Show and the future of H2 cars.

When it comes to hydrogen vehicles, most car companies are counting on little under-the-hood chemical refineries known as fuel cells. Trouble is, a fuel-cell system powerful enough for a car would add roughly $100,000 to sticker prices today. And then there's an even tougher problem: Where would drivers get the fuel? Fewer than 100 filling stations in the whole world now pump hydrogen. So it could be a couple of decades before fuel-cell cars become popular enough to make a dent either in pollution or in petroleum consumption. [ more ]

Wind turbines taking toll on birds of prey

USAToday.com has an article discussing the perils of wind energy and the ecological effects to local bird wildlife. [ more ]

After years of study but little progress reducing bird kills, environmentalists have sued to force turbine owners to take tough corrective measures. The companies, at risk of federal prosecution, say they see the need to protect birds.

The biggest concern is the Altamont pass near San Francisco.

Altamont Pass bird kills have been known for years, but turbine owners and federal regulators ignored them except to urge more research, says Miller of the Center for Biological Diversity. But a California Energy Commission study in August found bird fatalities much higher than had been thought and laid out steps to limit them.

This is just more fuel to the fire to get the Altamont pass upgraded. The newer technology and taller structures have decreased bird fatality. These future upgrades will reflect positively to the Wind generation stocks.

My Stock Picks for 2005

At my real job, a group of us have a yearly stock picking contest. Some years I have performed well, others have been terrible (last year my total performance for my picks was a miserable -13%.) The winner of 2004 was up over 50%. Her method, spread out the newspaper, take 3 M&M candies and throw them up in the air. She picked the 3 stocks the candies landed on.

The rules of our little contest are simple. Pick three stocks that trade for over $5. We buy at the close on the first trading day of the year (yesterday) and sell at the close on the last trading day of the year. We then average the performance of the 3 stock picks and don't count dividends.

This year I decided to pick only AltE stocks and here are my picks for 2005.

Mechanical Technology Inc (MKTY) is primarily engaged in the development and commercialization of direct methanol micro fuel cells (DMFCs) through its subsidiary, MTI MicroFuel Cells Inc. (MTI Micro) and in the design, manufacture and sale of high-performance test and measurement instruments and systems through its subsidiary, MTI Instruments, Inc. MTI also co-founded and retains an interest in Plug Power Inc., a designer and developer of onsite energy systems based on proton exchange membrane fuel cells.

Syntroleum Corp (SYNM) is engaged in the research and development of the syntroleum process, a process designed to convert natural gas or synthesis gas into synthetic liquid hydrocarbons, and activities related to commercialization of the syntroleum process.

Fuelcell Energy Inc (FCEL) is engaged in the development and commercialization of carbonate fuel cell technology for stationary power generation.

As in years past I purchased shares in each of these stocks (I already own FCEL and bought more.)
