Hydrogenics Corp (HYGS) announced that the Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) in Tsukuba, Japan, has purchased a Hydrogenics HyPM® 10 power module with associated test stand to be used as part of JARI's mandate to establish standards for Fuel Cell Power Module Testing, a program sponsored by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc (QTWW) announced that it received a contract from the U.S. Army's National Automotive Center (NAC) for an additional HyHauler Plus(TM) transportable hydrogen refueling station. Distributed Energy Systems Corp (DESC) announced that they received its third award from the University of Nevada Las Vegas Research Foundation (UNLVRF) to continue its work on hydrogen fueling stations for automobiles and other motor vehicles. The fueling station's design is expected to incorporate a high-capacity electrolyzer, capable of generating up to 12 kilograms per day of hydrogen enough to fuel at least two fuel cell light duty vehicles.

Fuelcell Energy Inc (FCEL) announced that Tokyo Gas has initiated a program to evaluate a Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) power plant for introducing these units to customers of its energy and industrial gas divisions. The unit is currently located at Kawasaki Heavy Industries' factory in Akashi, Japan, where Tokyo Gas will evaluate the power plant under a variety of expected operating conditions focusing particularly on grid interconnection performance. Tokyo Gas has agreed to install this DFC300A power plant at its new R&D center in Tsurumi in the second quarter of 2006.

Astris Energi Inc. (ASRNF) reports that construction of phase one of the pilot production plant designed to produce the new alkaline fuel cell POWERSTACK(TM) MC250 is on schedule. General Motors of Canada Limited and Hydrogenics Corp (HYGS) demonstrated that commercially viable hydrogen-powered industrial vehicles are closer to the market than many people think. Hydrogenics Corp (HYGS) announced that the company was awarded a contract by Basin Electric Power Cooperative, to supply an electrolyzer-based hydrogen refuelling station for installation in Minot, N.D. In addition to the core electrolyzer module, Hydrogenics is supplying compression, storage and dispenser equipment as part of the contract. The station is one of the first United States-based hydrogen fueling stations to use electricity from a wind power resource to produce hydrogen from water, in this case using electricity generated by wind resources either owned or contracted by Basin Electric. Distributed Energy Systems Corp (DESC) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiaries, Northern Power Systems and Proton Energy Systems, will build an advanced hydrogen fueling station through a partnership with EVermont, a non-profit organization that supports cleaner and more energy-sustainable vehicles. The grid-connected system will utilize locally generated renewable energy. This was made possible by a nearly $1 million Department of Energy (DOE) grant secured by Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-VT). The grant will be administered by the DOE's Hydrogen, Fuel Cell, and Infrastructure Technologies Program.

A FUEL CELL that runs on sugar rather than methanol is in development by Matsushita, according to a report in today's Nihon Keizai Shimbun. Practical applications could be as a source of power for heart pacemakers, using blood sugar to create electricity.

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc (QTWW) unveiled a hydrogen-hybrid demonstration vehicle today at the 2006 SAE World Congress in Detroit. Using a Ford Hybrid Escape as the demonstrator platform, the Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), with its National Automotive Center (NAC), and industry partner Quantum, is working to pair hybrid electric vehicles with a hydrogen delivery and storage system. Part of the 21st Century Base Initiative, this technology has the potential to offer a cost-effective alternative to full fuel cell powered vehicles.

Hydrogenics Corp (HYGS) announced that it has signed a contract to manufacture a self-contained regenerative fuel cell power system that will be used to provide auxiliary power for a U.S. Army Stryker Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV). This is a collaborative government project whereby Radian Inc. has entered into a contract with the United States Army (TACOM/TARDEC), and Hydrogenics has signed a defence industrial research contract with Defence R&D Canada, an agency of the Canadian Department of National Defence.

Maryland will lease a fuel cell-powered minivan from General Motors and will pursue plans for a hydrogen refueling station in the state. General Motors has partnered with Shell Hydrogen to open what will be the first hydrogen dispenser at a retail gas station in Washington this fall.
