Is Maxwell Technologies the Next China Victim? Not So Fast

Tom Konrad CFA Nightmare or business opportunity?  A Lishen-branded Ultracapacitor, with Maxwell electrode.  Photo credit: Wedbush On May 25,  research firm Wedbush released the green stock investor’s worst nightmare.  That is the specter of Chinese competition. Why are solar stocks down 75% (as measured by the Guggenhein Solar ETF, NYSE:TAN) since the start of 2011?  Chinese competition, leading to overcapacity and an industry where most companies are losing money, even on greatly increased volumes. Why are wind stocks down41% (as measured by the First Trust Global...

The Week In Cleantech: March 13-19, 2012

Jeff Siegel March 13: Do Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Shorts Get Burned? LED-maker Energy Focus, Inc. (OTCBB:EFOI) announced this morning that it entered into a 5-year cooperation agreement with Communal International, Inc. Under the terms of the deal, Communal will introduce Energy Focus to new potential customers in Asia and assist in reducing manufacturing cost. Ten Clean Energy Stocks I’d Buy Now

Tom Konrad CFA Buying opportunities return to clean energy. Two years ago I had a problem.  In the universe of clean energy stocks I watch, I could not find any that I thought were good values.  So I wrote an article saying "We're near the peak." If on the other hand, you'd been watching clean energy stocks, you would...

American Superconductor: Time to Catch a Falling Knife?

Tom Konrad CFA What is AMSC stock worth? American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC) investors panicked yet again on June 1st when the company said it would delay filing its annual report, needing additional time to review its recognition of revenue from Sinovel Wind Group (601558.SS) in the last three quarters of their fiscal 2010 (July 2010 thru March 2011.)  The stock promptly dropped another 20+% and is trading for around $8 as I write, down over 70% since the start of the year.  The Story So Far The delayed annual report...

Financial Innovation is Blowin’ in the Wind

Tom Konrad CFA Owning a wind farm is about to become a lot less risky. Wind power is cheap, clean, uses no water, and emits no pollutants.  Yet wind is far from a perfect source of electricity, since the wind blows when and where it will.  While wind power will never be as constant as baseload power, geographic diversification and better dispatch procedures can go a long way to mitigate the problems to utilities caused by wind's variability.  Yet wind farm developers and financiers are at the mercy of the weather in their...
