Ethanol Producers Climb to New Highs

Shares of ethanol producers extended their recent rally Monday, as oil refiners continued their rush to substitute ethanol for a toxic gasoline additive before the summer driving season shifts into gear. The enthusiasm for ethanol is tied to the fate of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), an additive mixed into gasoline to reduce pollution. Ormat Technologies Signs Contract to Supply a Bottoming Cycle Power Unit to Geothermal Power...

Ormat Technologies (ORA) has signed a contract to supply a 10 MW Ormat Energy Converter (OEC) power unit. The contract is in the amount of $11,500,000. Since beginning operations in Nevada with the supply of a 760 kW geothermal plant in Lyon County, Ormat has supplied or installed approximately 800 MW of geothermal and recovered energy power plants in 23 countries, and has grown to own six U.S. geothermal facilities with a total of approximately 300 MW of generating capacity. Calpine to sell about a fifth of power plants

Calpine Corp. (CPNLQ.PK) said it plans to sell about one-fifth of its power plants in a bid to emerge as a leaner company focused on its profitable geothermal and gas-fired operations. The company also said it plans to close three offices and cut about 775 jobs. Without identifying the plants, Calpine said the sale of about 20 facilities would allow it to focus on core assets and key markets. The company's largest power markets are California and Texas. Spire Corp (SPIR) announced that the Company is using its own SPI-LINE(TM) photovoltaic module production line to fabricate large-format, building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) modules for Kyocera Solar, Inc., demonstrating the capabilities of Spire's versatile manufacturing equipment. In 2005, Spire produced BIPV modules for Kyocera's Solar Grove installation in San Diego, California.

VRB Power Announces Shipment of First 10kWh VRB-ESS

VRB Power Systems (VRB.V) has completed the assembly and has commissioned the 30kW x 2 hour system for the South Carolina Air National Guard (SCANG). This system will be used for back-up power and to provide power quality enhancement for a tactical radar system in the event of grid disruption. Worldwater Corp (WWAT) announced that it has won a $1.9 million dollar bid award to design and install two solar electric systems at the Liberty Science Center, the most visited science museum in New Jersey. One photovoltaic installation, a 122 kW unit, is to be mounted on the roof of the newly expanded Liberty Science Center facility and will face the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of clean, renewable energy. Baron’s Thinks Archer Daniels Stock to Rise on Ethanol Harvest

Barons profiles Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (ADM) in the April 3rd edition. They feel that ADM shares are poised to climb further, literally fueled by its dominance of the ethanol market as investors seek alternative energy investments. Archer Daniels was believed to have secured a 50-cent per gallon increase in ethanol contract pricing to $1.85 per gallon in recent negotiations. Given ethanol price rises seen in the commodities market, Archer Daniels could reap significant further increases in its next round of talks for October contracts.

U.S. Army and Quantum Technologies Unveil the Hydrogen Escape Hybrid

Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc (QTWW) unveiled a hydrogen-hybrid demonstration vehicle today at the 2006 SAE World Congress in Detroit. Using a Ford Hybrid Escape as the demonstrator platform, the Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC), with its National Automotive Center (NAC), and industry partner Quantum, is working to pair hybrid electric vehicles with a hydrogen delivery and storage system. Part of the 21st Century Base Initiative, this technology has the potential to offer a cost-effective alternative to full fuel cell powered vehicles.
